The increasing availability of genetic screening tests, DNA tests, and now multiplex test panels also requires an understanding of what the tests tell you. Jerold Bell, DVM discusses the practical applications for using the results of these tests to improve the health of dogs, the dangers for the inappropriate use of genetic tests to dog health, and the roles of the breeder, dog owner and veterinarian in utilizing genetic tests. HGTD This week: Calling all breed experts!
Aimee Llewellyn-Zaidi posted a blog entry in HGTD & Genetic Testing
Calling All Breed Experts! HGTD’s phenes database and breed relevancy ratings (BRR) are an important source of information for anyone engaged in dog health and breeding, through the harmonizing of scientific data from a wide-variety of experts, research publications, veterinary and genetics researcher contributions, and in-house expertise. Just as important, though, are the contributions from breed experts. Breed experts are individuals with significant knowledge of their breed or breeds. Breed experts are most often breed or kennel club members who work on health and breeding strate-

HGTD - What is a Breed Relevance Rating? To better support dog owners, the veterinary community, and dog health advisors, in 2020 we introduced Breed Relevance Ratings in the HGTD. Below you will find an explanation of what the Breed Relevance Rating (BRR) is and why it is important. A work in progress... the BRR is a dynamic index that may change as new information becomes available. To summarize the HGTD database relevance rating indicates the level of available evidence supporting the application of a specific genetic test for a specific breed/type.Currently, the relevanc

19 Oct 2020 If you’re a dog owner, or looking for a puppy what does it REALLY mean when a dog is “genetically tested”? “My dog is genetically tested” is an increasingly common statement from dog owners. We see it on breeder’s webpages as part of advertising puppies, or as information on the dam/sire… it’s common on social media as a point of pride or a mark of care and responsibility by owners… but what does genetically tested (or DNA tested) actually mean? While using genetic testing as part of pre-breeding testing is a really valuable tool, a genetically tested dog is not, in itse

Not all puppies from health-tested parents will be healthy!
Brenda Bonnett posted a blog entry in Brenda's Blog
And not all dams and sires with 'clear' test results will be good choices for breeding. Oh, would that life and breeding decisions could be made easy! But every experienced breeder knows that nothing is simple. Breeding and inheritance and health and temperament are very complex issues - each on their own - and combined they constitute a puzzle with no guaranteed solutions. With the increased availability of genetic testing, with its media-inspired aura of high-tech infallibility and direct-to-consumer marketing campaigns, there has been a rush to embrace it as THE most important pre--

In our final installment of the Digest for 2019, we are putting the spotlight on 2019 milestones, and looking forward to 2020 – which promises to be a pivotal year for IPFD and DogWellNet.com. In 2019, our fifth full year of operation, we focused our efforts on several key initiatives, including: the Harmonization of Genetic Testing for Dogs (HGTD); the 4th International Dog Health Workshop (IDHW); the continued growth of DogWellNet.com and our online community. We provided an independent voice in addressing complex and often controversial challenges, including "Hot Topics" such as ca -
Harmonization of Genetic Testing (HGTD) 2019 Summary
Brenda Bonnett posted a blog entry in HGTD & Genetic Testing
The HGTD arose from discussions at the IPFD International Dog Health Workshops (IDHWs); it is a proud achievement, exemplifying the IDHW tagline: Information – Collaboration – Action! In 2019, the HGTD project could be summarized in one word: Growing. We’ve consistently grown our list of genetic test providers (GTPs). Participating GTPs have provided information on their accreditation, expertise, and practices – all of which helps individuals find a GTP that has the quality measures most important to them. The generic phenes database provided a centralized resource for researchers,-

How to Use The HGTD: Welcome to the Harmonization of Genetic Testing for Dogs resource. This resource is designed to improve standardization of, and access to, robust genetic testing to support health improvements and a sustainable future for healthy dogs. Here, you’ll find a wealth of information on Genetic Testing Providers (labs); genetic tests, and tests by breed. There are two major components of the HGTD: the Quality Testing Database and Genetic Counselling resources (still in development).

I was honoured to again be invited to speak at the 2019 AKC Canine Health Foundation National Parent Club Canine Health Conference August 9-11 in St. Louis, Missouri. This is a great event that brings together breed club health committee members, other interested breeders, stellar researchers, and others from the dog community. There was a broad coverage of CHF sponsored research topics, as well as a definite focus on genetics and genetic testing, reflecting the continued need for information and support for the dog community on these issues. In addition to lectures, there were
