BVA congress: Improving the health of pedigree dogs: is enough being done?

By DWN Staff
Published

Nick Blayney's remarks covered in the Veterinary Record article encouraged vets to adopt a 'balanced and informed view of pedigreed dogs'.

Points covered:

  • numbers: KC registered dogs in comparison to all dogs
  • vets need to be a 'critical friend rather than a critic';
  • historical information on The Kennel Club's approaches to addressing purebred dog health through health programs;
  • The Kennel Club's involvement and assistance of veterinarians who serve on KC and breed club steering groups and committees.

Dr. Brenda Bonnett's presentation addressed the need for international collaboration, and stressed making a difference in matters of dog health and welfare by working together.

Points covered:

  • identifying breed problems, duplication of efforts by separate organizations and measuring successes;
  • media and perceptions of health issues - hot topics examples;
  • learning from other kennel clubs;
  • communication - International Partnership for Dogs

The article (BVA congress: Improving the health of pedigree dogs: is enough being done?) is available in the Journal of the British Veterinary Association (fee).
