    In order to understand, interpret and properly extrapolate and compare findings across countries it is necessary to know details about how the information was collected and any limitations of the study design.  For example, the accuracy and application of the findings from formally designed research studies may differ from those from polling type studies or non-methodical online surveys.     • The number of dogs owned, the percent of households owning dogs and other pets, the demographics of owners vs. non-owners of pets and other details of pet ownership are of interest to various stakeholder groups.  Because of this, ownership surveys and studies have often been done by various pet industry groups and/or researchers or others. As interesting as it is to compare numbers and descriptions across areas and studies, it is important to critically evaluate the design and analysis that was used to collect and present the information.
