1. Dogs must always be treated well and be kept in a way that allow them to express their natural need for movement, exercise, activity and social contact. Participation in a dog show or trial is not necessary to maintain the welfare of the dog, but is the choice of the owners as part of their hobby or interest. It is the owners' responsibility to maintain the welfare of the dog at all times. 2. The integrity and self-worth of the dog must always be respected, regardless of the owners' goals a- Owners must follow the rules and regulations of the Norwegian Kennel Club (NKK) in all dog shows and trials. NKK's ethical guidelines for keeping and training dogs and NKK's anti-doping rules are especially relevant, in addition to the rules and regulations that apply to the specific activity.

Other dogs are primarily kept for utility purposes, such as hunting and service dogs, which are of great benefit to society. This article provides an overview of the SKK's structure, working programs and strategies to improve health in purebred dogs. Genetic health programs, use of Molecular genetic tests as well as a focus on the need for an international approach to management of health are discussed.
