Papillon

The Papillon, also called the Continental Toy Spaniel, is a breed of dog of the Spaniel type. One of the oldest of the toy spaniels, it derives its name from its characteristic butterfly-like look of the long and fringed hair on the ears, the French word for "butterfly" being papillon.

The basis of breed/conformation shows is the judging of pedigree dogs against the 'Breed Standard', which is a picture in words that describes the range of features that are deemed appropriate & mandatory for correct  breed type.

Each of the official international FCI Breed Standards is written, owned & managed by the breed’s COUNTRY OF ORIGIN or COO ( being the Cradle of the Breed & holder of the Mother Studbook) for each & every breed.

For the Continental Toy Spaniel / L’Epagneul Nain Continental (the breed has 2 distinct varieties being the Papillon with erect ears & the Phalène with drop ears) this task is done jointly by France & Belgium.

The international standard is jointly managed by France & Belgium as COO and is No 77 Standard with the  

FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale)
