Please join us in welcoming our new CEO, Marc Ralsky. Marc has broad experience as a not-for-profit leader and has worked extensively on fundraising and corporate sponsorship with various organizations. He is also a member of the CKC Board. Marc owns and breeds Siberian Huskies, and co-owns Toy Manchesters and Samoyeds, and shows them in conformation shows worldwide. You can read Marc's full bio here.
We also wish to thank Katariina Mäki for her leadership as Acting CEO during this extended transition period. Katariina returns to her role as IPFD's Business and Project Coordinator. -
Our founding CEO, Dr. Brenda Bonnett has been appointed honorary doctor of veterinary medicine at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science. She was one of eight honorary doctors who lectured at SLU on October 7. IPFD Collaborating Partner, The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA), has recently published the latest edition of Dog Breeds: What You Need to Know, a regular feature in their online news section (and in the WSAVA Bulletin) that highlights IPFD resources on a particular breed with a focus on breed-specific diseases.

- Also from WSAVA: Two veterinarians, Dr. Nicola Neumann and Dr. Gregg Takashima, are receiving WSAVA’s prestigious President’s Award at its World Congress. This award recognizes exceptional service to the WSAVA, with the awardees selected by the WSAVA President, Dr Siraya Chunekamrai. WSAVA World Congress is taking place in Lima, Peru from 29-31 October.
- IPFD friend and contributor Ian Seath recently published an article on the meaning of “soundness” in dogs: Sound in wind and limb – what do we mean by “sound”?

Kennel clubs (KCs) everywhere are under pressure to improve and expand activities under almost all areas of their mandate (e.g., breeding, legislation, information technology, etc.). Two global examples:
- Media and societal pressure about health, well-being, and welfare in dogs
- Need to be more proactive in addressing issues and highlighting positives of dogs, in general, purebred dogs and shows/performance and breeding
- Regulatory issues, governments, etc., e.g., dangerous dog legislation, restrictions; guidelines for dog breeders (especially commercial)
- Similar efforts in many countries; poor synthesis of existing information, decisions not always evidence-based
- KCs, breeders and other stakeholders need improved access to existing information and resources
- Many stakeholders/KCs have a lot to share, however, many resources are difficult to locate and language may pose difficulties.
- Once information is found or assembled, there is a need for synthesis and expert evaluation of that information to promote guidance- and evidence-based decision making.
- Issues affecting the health and welfare of dogs are global in scope, therefore international collaboration and co-operation are needed.

★ This Month We Feature the Staffordshire Bull Terrier ★
Brief Description: The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, also called the Staffy or Stafford, is a purebred dog of small to medium size in the terrier group that originated in the northern parts of Birmingham and in the Black Country of Staffordshire, for which it is named. They descended from 19th century bull terriers that were developed by crossing bulldogs with various terriers to create a generic type of dog generally known as bull and terriers. Staffords share the same ancestry with the modern Bull Terrier, although the two breeds developed along independent lines, and do not resemble each other. Modern Staffords more closely resemble the old type of bull terrier, and was first recognised as a purebred dog breed by The Kennel Club of Great Britain in 1935.

IPFD: Background and Development
A Continuing and Sustainable Development 
The International Partnership for Dogs (IPFD) and DogWellNet.com came into being following a long history of efforts by many stakeholders to address dog health and well-being.
Development was inaugurated under the patronage of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI). The major contributors (in-kind and funding) since 2011 have been, chronologically, the Agria Animal Insurance-Swedish Kennel Club Research Fund, the Swedish Kennel Club (SKK), and the FCI; as well as, other national kennel clubs (from Finland, The UK, France, Germany, Ireland, and the USA (AKC)).

Dr. Brenda Bonnett makes a proposal to develop a canine health and welfare information network funded by Agria-SKC Research Foundation, originally known as 'Sharing and Caring for Dogs.

We've compiled an abbreviated timeline of key developments in the creation of IPFD as we now know it, highlighting the complexity of issues addressed by the IPFD and DogWellNet.com.
