Details
STR DNA-Profiles can be used to assess the genetic heterozygosity of the breed, the line as well as individual dogs, to support breeders and breed clubs who want to maintain or improve genetic diversity. Generally speaking, STR-based diversity tests use a small number of specific STR selected from across the genome. These often are based on an ISAG STR panel, but not always. Non-ISAG, STR-based panels will vary according to the test provider. Some STR-based testing will include both ISAG 2006 and additional, proprietary STRs. Test results may include the number of STR loci included in the test, and will often report on estimated diversity within the individual dog, across the breed, and indicate or highlight geographical difference across the breed. Some also include a breed-wide allele frequency. Optional breeding tools to aid in selecting more diverse matings may also be included.
