Details
The International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG) workshop for Applied Genetics of Companion Animals developed a standardized single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) panel for dogs. ISAG provides panels (such as the previous Short-tandem repeat (STR) 2006 panel) to be used by the ISAG community to ensure that data and standards in parentage (and others, such as genotyping for identification) can be shared across international laboratories - allowing individual dogs and pedigree registrations to be validated. 2 SNP panels have been developed for standardized use. Panel 1 is the core panel for determining parentage. Panel 2 is an optional additional panel available for difficult parentage cases. Dogs with an ISAG STR-based panel test should not be considered inaccurate. SNP-based tests are a different technology, which is increasingly utilized by test providers.
Application Information
Dogs who currently hold and ISAG Parentage test using STR panel data (eg. ISAG 2006) may wish to consider being re-tested under the new SNP panel to make parentage referencing for future generations easier.
Phene Discovery
The SNP 2020 Panel was developed by ISAG Committee members: Leslie Lyons (Chair) ? University of Missouri (lyonsla@missouri.edu); George Sofronidis - Orivet (george@orivet.com); Jiansheng Qiu (Co-Chair) ? Neogen (JQiu@neogen.com); Hubert Bauer/Anna-Lena Van De Weyer ? Labogen (labogen@laboklin.com); Robert Grahn ? UC Davis, (ragrahn@ucdavis.edu); Peter Dovc ? University of Ljubljana (Peter.dovc@bf.uni-lj.si); Maria Longeri ? University of Milan (maria.longeri@unimi.it) Independently, three groups (Neogen, Orivet, Vetgenomics) had developed panels of SNPs for applications in domestic dog and their breeds. The SNPs and allele frequency information were provided from each group to help develop two (2) panels, a primary and a secondary panel. Panels were primarily selected to be highly informative across many breeds and to include a balanced selection of markers from the three groups. Dr. Oliver Forman from Mars, Inc. provided substantial assistance with the marker selection and data from diverse dog breeds for all the SNP markers. (From information provided by ISAG, 14 Feb 2020)
