The IC Locus determines for some breeds the variation in the dog's coat that makes its texture and appearance look different from the breed standard - i.e. change in hair type from wired to straight. It can also influence the presense or absense of "furnishings" (mustache and eyebrows). For some breeds and crosses, having the Improper Coat (IC) variation appears to be associated with dogs prone to shedding. Inherited phenotypes include: furnishings + proper coat, furnishings + improper coat, no furnishings + improper coat. The overall coat type is dependent on the combination of this dog's genotypes at the L, Cu, and IC loci.
