  • ~ Global Pet Obesity Initiative (GPOI) ~

IPFD has endorsed the Global Pet Obesity Initiative Position Statement, joining 24 International Veterinary Professional Organizations, including the American Veterinary Medical Association Board of Directors, British Small Animal Veterinary Association, Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, World Small Animal Veterinary Association, and others.

      About Us:

The GPOI Position Statement (Click here (pdf) or here (online)) was co-authored by Ernie Ward DVM; Alexander J. German BVSc, PhD, Cert SAM, DECVIM, SFHEA, FRVCS; and Julie A. Churchill DVM, PhD, DACVN – members of the Executive Board of the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP).

15157_APOP_LOGO_FINAL+copy.pngAPOP is comprised of veterinarians and veterinary healthcare personnel who are committed to making the lives of dogs, cats, all other animals and people healthier and more vital. The association has launched campaigns to fight pet obesity, including the Global Pet Obesity Initiative Position Statement.

The Global Pet Obesity Initiative Position Statement Principles:

Uniform Definition of Obesity: Calling for the veterinary profession to adopt uniform nomenclature for canine and feline obesity.

Universal Body Condition Score System: Urging the global veterinary community to adopt a universal Body Condition Score for dogs and cats

Defining Obesity as a Disease: Calling for the veterinary profession formally to recognize canine and feline obesity as a disease.
