Details
In affected dogs, the zonular fibres which support the lens in the eye, breakdown or disintegrate, causing the lens to fall into the wrong position within the eye. PLL is a painful and blinding inherited eye condition that affects many breeds of dog. Clinical signs include reddening of the eye, glaucoma (increased pressure within the eyeball) and loss of vision, which can be detectable at 20 months. Complete lens luxation typically occurs at the age of 3-8 years.

Origional researcher comments: Publication demonstrating clinically affected dogs of multiple breeds (in addition to 3 discovery breeds reported in Farias et al, 2010) are homozygous for mutation. Provided evidence that this mutation is widespread among breeds. No functional evidence provided in this publication, but Farias et al., demonstrated that mutation is highly penetrant, indicating likely to be causal in additional breeds. Key Comment

Findings indicate the mutation segregates in a large number of different breeds of dog, many of which are terriers or breeds with terrier co?ancestry, but some of which have more diverse origins. Research indicates that the mutation is present at high frequency within most of the breeds in which it segregates. (Gould et. al, 2011)
